As St. Valentine's Day approaches, take your kids to the library and look up the historical St. Valentine and how his name and memory became a holiday for lovers. Use the holiday as a time to point out how easy it is to take love for granted, and that we need to demonstrate love all year long. Help them make a special gift for each family member as a way to say "I Love You" just because you are you. It is a great opportunity to teach unconditional love -- the idea that we love each other regardless of what we do or don't do. (02/01/2000)
