Revisiting Old Traditions

by Larry E. Quicksall

Someone once said "Traditions bind generations together." I believe this statement to be very true and see it in my own family. It is also true in one's marriage. What are the traditions that you use to have when you were dating? Did you have a favorite restaurant? A favorite song? A favorite park to walk in? Have you rekindled any of those traditions with your spouse lately? As I write this tip, my wife and I are preparing to remember the night we first met in 1990. We both were invited to a mutual friend's house for a party. Shannon brought fresh-baked cookies, and I had brought a bottle of an "adult beverage." We got to know each other over those refreshments that night, and all these years later we still try to have the traditional "treats," though admittedly harder to accomplish with two young children. So, think back to your dating days, remember an old tradition, and rekindle it "for old times' sake." Talk about what you remember from that time, and whether things that were forgotten would be beneficial today. Now, if you will excuse me, I have cookies to remove from the oven.... I'm baking this year! (11/21/1999)
