Resolve to Play

by Larry E. Quicksall

Parents, how much time are you spending one-on-one with your kids? Remember, the time you spend with them today is an investment in the future when your advice or restrictions really matter for their welfare. A good starting place is to set aside one evening a week as "play night."

A year ago I would have recommended something called Family Night, but my opinion has changed. Family Nights are usually parents imposing a dull, boring, meaningful activity on the family that is persistently dreaded. Play Night is just that -- a time to play with the kids. Also, it is play on their level. If you have little ones, play with their cars, dolls, or cardboard boxes. If the kids are into books or Lego's or video games, then play those games with them. If they like to play outside or in the woods, then follow them into their terrain.

When we play with our kids on their terms, we are building a tight bond that we can use to lead them down the paths to becoming strong, healthy adults. So, make a resolution to make one night a week a "play night," and have fun with these precious gifts that God has given you. (12/26/1999)
