Oh, Go Fly a Kite

by Larry E. Quicksall

How does the old saying go?  “March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb” or “March comes in like a lamb and out like a lion?” However the month of March is coming, you can bet your bottom dollar it’s going to be windy. In our present society it is easy to spend too much time in front of the TV, and the same is true of our kids. With programs and videos designed to keep them glued to the screens, it is very common for them to be conditioned to be entertained rather than learn how to entertain themselves with an activity they have to initiate and actually participate in.  So, take advantage of the weather, grab your child (or spouse if you have no kids) and go build and fly a kite.

Yes, you read that right, go BUILD and FLY a kite. In all honesty, I’m not sure if I have ever built a kite, but from reading children’s activities books available at the library, I believe it is far from impossible. Get together with your child, find some string, paper, and a couple of sticks and have fun making and flying your home-made kite. You’ll remember your adventure for a long time to come. Oh, and don’t forget the tail! (03/01/2000)
